Henrik Vanger is a retired industrialist featured in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. He's a widower and was married to a Jewish woman he helped escape Germany during World War II. This earned him the scorn of his three Nazi brothers, two of whom are now dead. He owns most of Hedeby Island and is current patriarch of the Vanger clan.

Physical Description[]

"He looked surprisingly vigorous for eighty-two: a wiry body with rugged, weather-beaten face and thick grey hair combed straight back... He had a narrow mustache and thin steel-rimmed glasses."

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo[]

82 years old. He used to run the Vanger Corporation until he stepped down following the disappearance of his niece, Harriet Vanger. He hires Mikael Blomkvist to try to solve the cold case in exchange for incriminating evidence against the billionaire Weinstrom that can help Mikael restores his reputation and career.

After Mikael completed his task, Henrik gives the evidence to Mikael but proved to be outdated and useless. However, with the help of Lisbeth, Mikael manages to clear his name.

In the American film remake, the Young Henrik Vanger is played by Julian Sands.

On the walls of his study hangs 43 dried and framed exotic flowers. The first seven were gifts from his niece, the other arrived on the time for his birthday, anonymously, since Harriet disappeared.

In the novel, Henirk is portrayed to be more sly since the incriminating evidence he promised to Mikael turned out to be bait to get him to do his task of finding Harriet while in the movie, he is more honorable since he does have evidence against Weinstrom as reward for Mikael for doing his task.
